This is a guide for completing Talesworth Arena: Death Watch on Normal difficulty as an Engineer. I’ve given as much information as possible about skills, upgrades, enemies, and bosses. I hope you find this guide helpful!

Just to say this now:
If you lose a battle, you lose some experience. If you don’t have any experience, you’ll lose some gold. You’ll also lose gold and not experience if you lose against a boss.

You also can’t “gold farm”. 10 battles after you’ve reached maximum experience, you will earn 5% less gold each fight. (So first it’s 5% less, then 10% less, etc.) This penalty cannot be removed until you gain a level.

You can get a maximum of 17 Runes in one game.

The purpose of Talesworth is to rise through the ranks in the arena and beat the champion. You will have four to six options at any time:
Training: Purchase abilities to use in combat; new abilities available each level
Tavern: Equip and unequip artifacts, manage quests, sell artifacts
Bazaar: Buy artifacts. Begins with 3 items in inventory, and will gain one more for each level. Gets new inventory every 3 victories. (Artifacts aren’t really that important, in my opinion. They don’t bring bonuses that big, although I do like artifacts that let you see your opponent’s health.)
Arena: Fight an opponent. You will randomly fight one of two possible opponents.
Boss: Fight the boss of a level. Available when you have enough experience
Black Market: Available starting at Level 6. A one-time fee of 300g is required to enter. You can trade Runes for permanent upgrades to your abilities. There is 1 upgrade for each of your 9 attacks.

Runes:

Buy upgrades for whichever abilities you find yourself using a lot. I’ll give my personal opinion.

Weapon Spike – 3
+10% dmg boost to weapon
I’d get it; the weapon is probably the ability I use the most.

Steel Toed Boots – 3
1 extra stun second for Groin Kick
I like this too. A few extra seconds can make all the difference in a close battle.

Gas Tank Pump – 1
Reduce Refill Gas Tank cool 20%
Considering you need gas for a lot of your abilities, I got this.

Fire Beetles – 3
+10% dmg boost to Flamethrower
I think Flamethrower does enough damage, and there are better things to spend your runes on. I did buy it… but it was the last one I bought.

Spring Tightener – 2
Reduce Fist on Spring cool 15%
Interrupting is great, so I got this.

Tiny Megaphone – 1
Increases Mechanical Gnat’s slowing percentage 10%
I don’t use this ability too often, so I didn’t get it.

WD-50 Grease – 2
+50% to Bionic Limbs buff
Don’t use too often, didn’t buy.

Grenade Belt – 2
Reduce Anti-Magic Grenade cool 15%
While Anti-Magic Grenade does come in handy, there are other upgrades I like better.

Silver Toolset – 3
+25% heal with Robotic Medic
While healing is nice, I don’t use it that much, and there are better upgrades (in my opinion).

In the end, I had every upgrade but the one for Mechanical Insect and Bionic Limbs.

Enemy Strategies:

Goblin Grunt: Cast Flamethrower as soon as the battle begins. (If you have Groin Kick, cast that and then Flamethrower.) Cast Slingshot and Flamethrower as soon as they are ready. (Also cast Groin Kick when it’s ready.) Watch for when his Shield Bash is ready; if you are quick you can get a Slingshot in it, but once it is ready wait for him to cast it before you cast anything again. You don’t have anything quicker than his Shield Bash, so if you cast something while he’s casting it, it’ll interrupt you.

Dirty Thug: He is exactly the same as the Goblin Grunt, except his attacks have different names. Follow the same strategy.

Goblin Shaman: The only real concern is Lesser Healing. Cast Flamethrower and Slingshot whenever you can. Watch out for when his health goes below half. As soon as he casts Lesser Healing, use Groin Kick; it’s faster, so you should be able to interrupt him.

Desperate Wretch: Use Groin Kick, Flamethrower, and Slingshot whenever they are available, going from highest priority to lowest priority in that order. (Ex. If Groin Kick and Flamethrower are both available, use Groin Kick.)

Speedy Bandit: You can easily stop Trip with Fist on Spring or Groin Kick. Disarm is annoying, but not too bad. Just attack with your weapon and Flamethrower, refilling your gas if necessary, and interrupting Trip and maybe Disarm.

Human Biotech: Interrupt Syphon Gas with Groin Kick and Fist on Spring. Attack him normally.

Harney, Town Drunk: Dazing Punch is annoying and I recommend interrupting it. The rest is a bit difficult to stop, so just lay on the hurt while interrupting Dazing Punch.

Evil Alchemist: Speed Potion is annoying, and you can use an Anti-Magic Grenade on it if you want. Bionic Arms is good for countering Weakness Mist. Make sure you interrupt Healing Potion! Keep up your assault and keep an eye on your gas, and you’ll be fine.

Minotaur: He can dish out some heavy damage, but he’s kind of slow. Just make sure you interrupt Enrage, because that will seriously speed him up. You should be able to deal more damage than him, so just keep an eye out for Enrage and you’ll be fine. (And if he does get it in, you can use Anti-Magic Grenade.)

Black Pudding: Ugh, designed specifically for Engineers. I would advice interrupting Melt Gas Tank, Clogging Slime, and/or Swallow Whole. Just attack as much as you can; all his attacks have high cooldowns, so you won’t suffer the same one over and over and over again. Annoying, but still very manageable.

Fizzle, Hired Mercenary: Interrupt Healing Ointment, counter Demoralize with Bionic Limbs, and get rid of Motivate with Anti-Magic Grenade. Besides that, just keep up your assault with Flamethrower, Dart Pistol and Groin Kick.

Human Paladin: Use Fist on Spring to interrupt Annoying Stun and Healing Life, and Anti-Magic Grenade to stop Life Fountain (you gotta be quick!). It’s annoying when he buffs his damage and decreases yours, but the healing and stun are worse. He seems pretty bad, but I think he’s actually okay. (Especially compared to Black Pudding.)

Wraith: Use Fist on Spring to interrupt Spectral Touch, and Groin Kick to interrupt Icy Gaze. Anti-Magic Grenade on Spectral Shield if you want, but besides that just attack.

Trent, Crimson Brother: A pushover. Both Healing Potion and Telegraphed Trip are really annoying. Interrupt whichever one you can, and attack.

Anya, Guild Mandrake: Okay, she’s a bit tougher. Interrupt Healing Potion, and use Anti-Magic Grenade on Tirade. Besides that, keep up your attacks. If you really want you can interrupt Killing Blow, but Healing Potion is worse.

Ancient Mariner: Mechanical Parrot and Syphon Gas are both annoying and worth interrupting. Use Anti-Magic Grenade against Hydraulic Peg Legs. And as always, keep on attacking.

Ogre: Use Anti-Magic Grenade on Enrage, although you may need to use Fist on Spring the second time around. Definitely interrupt KO Punch. No use interrupting Startling Bite (just don’t cast anything for a moment, or cast your weapon if you’re quick). Keep on attacking, and make sure you still use Flamethrower or Robotic Medic or something if he disarms you.

Skeletal Psionic: Remember how Nin’nak had that really annoying Reflection spell? Well guess who else has it! Interrupt it. It is very annoying have Enfeeble Ray and Arcane Armor, but just accept the ray and grenade the armor. Be careful about Bolt of Frost slowing you; if you have a second left on it, wait for it to wear off because the longer casting time will apply the entire cast as long as the cast begins while Bolt of Frost is still active.

Zombie Cleric Anomoly: I always start off battles with a Groin Kick; don’t! He will use his reflect spell on you. It only lasts 1 second, so it only reflects one attack, but when it’s something like Groin Kick… Considering it has a cast time of half a second, it’s a bit hard to block. Start off with something else, and use Groin Kick after he reflects. Break Devices is pretty annoying (it leaves you with only Groin Kick and your weapon) but can be easily interrupted and has a huge cooldown. You can lay off Flamethrower a bit for this battle because of Shakeoff Flames.

TechnoTroll: Extremely annoying. Only one of his attacks is an attack! You can’t do much about his two interrupters, although they do have a large cooldown. Make sure you interrupt or use Anti-Magic Grenade on his heal. And make sure you interrupt Piercing Scream! If you’re really good you can use Groin Kick, but otherwise just use Fist on Spring.

Automaton 6000: At the very start, interrupt Immunity Shield and immediately cast Groin Kick. Anyway, he has lots of bad things… Two healers; I recommend Fist on Spring for Healing Oil and Anti-Magic Grenade for Nano Repairbots. I’d also interrupt Stunning Bolt. You could also interrupt Refill Gas Tank, which stops a lot of things at once. (Of course, Healing Oil doesn’t use gas, so…) If he uses Immunity Shield cast Bionic Arms, Mechanical Fly, or Robot Medic, and otherwise keep up your attack.

Crafty Mage: Nothing too earth-shattering, actually. No one spell really sticks out; I’d interrupt Poison Decay, since it deals the most damage. Otherwise attack attack attack, and be careful when he scrambles your buttons.

Shimshank: Use Anti-Magic Grenade on Enrage, and interrupt Sweep the leg. Besides that keep up your attacks.

Grog, Arena Overseer: Argh, reflection! Be extra careful of it. Make sure you interrupt it; if you don’t, cast Bionic Limbs, refill your gas, or heal in the meantime. Otherwise keep up your offense! Don’t let this little pipsqueak push you around!

Chimera: This guy is pretty slow and doesn’t have much health, at least. Interrupt Venomous Strike. Slowing Aura is really annoying, but can’t be helped. Besides that, the only thing you can really do is attack.

Killer Bunny: First use your Holy Hand Gre… oh, wait. Never mind. He’s actually pretty easy; just like the earlier levels, just keep up with your weapon, Groin Kick, Flamethrower, and refill your gas when you need to, and you’ll come out on top.

Gok, Disgruntled Ogre: Remember that other ogre, Slog? Yeah… This guy has 2 scrambles, which you should watch out for. Also interrupt Brutal Flurry. If you really hate the slowed cursor and don’t mind being slowed, you can interrupt Knock for a Loop instead. Otherwise concentrate on attacking to take away as much health as you can.

Dragonbreed: Interrupt Fear Paralysis, use Anti-Magic Grenade on Bloodmend. You can counter Plate Armor with Bionic Limbs, if you want. Icy Breath is pretty annoying, but I like slow better than stun. Just keep on attacking.

Greater Demon: Gah! Another reflection! Make sure to interrupt it. However, he’ll start off with Evil Trance, so interrupt that and then use Groin Kick. (Just like the Automaton 6000.) Anti-Magic Grenade against Imp Form. Otherwise attack attack attack (and heal).

Boss Strategies:

Pepe LeTank: Boy, he can interrupt you… Start off with Groin Kick (he should try to cast Charge) and then Flamethrower. Just keep at him; you’ll run out of gas for Flamethrower, but keep up with Slingshot and Groin Kick when possible. He can disarm Slingshot, but it’s only for four seconds; you may cut it a bit close, but you shouldn’t have trouble.

Master Psionic Belzar: Your only concern in Mental Healing. Brain Shocker is a bit annoying but shouldn’t be too hard, and everything else is just damage. You MUST stop Mental Healing; if you let him get it in once you can still win, but only if you’re good and lucky. (I was able to do it, but I won with only 2 health left.) Save Fist on Spring for Mental Healing, and make sure you don’t use Flamethrower too many times. Mental Healing is faster than Refill Gas Tank, meaning if you don’t have the gas when he wants to heal, you’re gone. However, if you do stop his healing, this is a pretty easy fight.

Rufuss, Master Swordsman: Some good damage-dealing moves, but hiding skill names and causing them to drift isn’t too bad (when separated, at least). Pommel stuns you, so you should use Fist on Spring on it; both have a cooldown of 15s, so it should be fine. Keep up your assault besides that with Flamethrower, Light Crossbow, and Groin Kick, and you’ll be fine (refilling your gas when necessary).

Nin’nak the Wisened: Interrupt Reflection. Besides that, attack attack attack. …And just for good measure, be VERY careful with Reflection, because that’s what will be what kills you. (If he does get it in, make sure you use that time to refill your gas or use Bionic Limbs; don’t just waste those seconds!)

Arena-Grinder XT9000: Interrupt Repair Bot and Vicegrip Stun, and use Anti-Magic Grenade against Repair Bot and Armor Boost. Groin Kick can beat Repair Bot and Sonic Boom if you’re fast. Keep on attacking between all this! He also has no way of recovering gas… but I think he has enough that you don’t need to fight a battle of attrition.

Jingles, Jester Prince: He has lots of good abilities and very quick cast times, but extremely long cooldowns. His fastest cooldown is 8 seconds, and his second fastest is 25! Interrupt Healing Potion, Bag of Tricks, and Tell Bad Jokes. (Not that you can interrupt all of them, but still…) You might want to use a grenade on Eat Goofballs. Keep up your assault with your weapon, and you should be fine.

Slog, Grog’s Older Brother: He has 3 skills that scramble your skills, and you won’t interrupt it unless you’re really fast. Find your most-used skills as soon as you can, and make sure you interrupt Brutal Flurry! If you keep on attacking, you should be able to win pretty easily.

Medusa: Either use Flamethrower a lot or don’t use it at all. She can reflect it back at you, but afterwards you want to take advantage of its long cooldown. I’d interrupt Heavy Legs, since there isn’t too much else to interrupt. (Maybe Snake Attack, if you’re quick.) Use Anti-Magic Grenade to get rid of Mana Shield, or use non-offensives skills until it wears off. Be careful about her scramble, and keep up your attack. It’s really annoying when she scrambles and slows you, but just keep it up.

Jasper, Lich Baron: Interrupt Shocking Grasp. I’d recommend using Anti-Magic Grenade on Dark Shroud. Also interrupt Touch of Death if you’re running low on health (since it does 250 damage). Those are his only real threats, so make sure you keep on attacking! (He can blind you and scramble your skills, so be very careful, and find your weapon as quickly as possible after a scramble!)

Arena Master Krax: This is it, the final battle! Make sure the Emerald Crown is equipped. Krax will have Death Watch active from the get-go. Start off with Robotic Surgeon, and use it whenever it resets so you can heal as much as you can. Get rid of Painkillers and Ethereal Shield; Anvil on Spring and Anti-Magic Grenade works for both. Adrenaline Overdose can be annoying if he uses it in the right spot. Fire Shield and Blinding Powder actually aren’t that bad. Smelling Salts is VERY annoying, but at least it has a large cooldown itself. Just heal, prevent his worst skills, and attack, and you should make it through this… And then you’re done. Congratulations!

Events:

After about two battles, Lar will come up to you. You have the option of either helping him or not. If you don’t, nothing happens. If you help him, you will fight two Dirty Thugs and get an extra 10g afterwards.

After another battle or two, a Shady Gambler will approach you. You have 3 options: Try it (you can win 35g), don’t try it, or call a guard. Nothing happens if you don’t try it. It costs 10g to try; the right shell is randomly chosen. If you call a guard, you’ll be forced into a battle in Level 4 (you’ll get 150g from this battle). I recommend calling a guard.

---

At the beginning of Level 2, someone should ask you the name of the Captain of the City Guard. Saying “Lar” gives you 15g and 50 experience.

---

During Level 2 you’ll get the option to help a woman. If you walk away, nothing happens. You can then call the guard, help the woman, or scare the woman. If you call the guard you get some gold now. Still, I’d recommend helping the woman. (Trust me.)

In Level 5, a woman will approach you asking you to find her dog. Just do it. Go North, North, West, South, West, East. You’ll get 235g and 150 experience.

---

In Level 6 you need to face Rook or flee. If you choose to flee, this quest goes into the Tavern so you can do it later. If you choose to face him… you can get into the Black Market for 300g. Do it (or get the money, if you need, and do it). You’ll then be able to get into the Black Market and spend your runes!

---

In Level 6, you’ll be able to investigate a sound or leave it alone. If you leave it alone, nothing happens. If you investigate it, you’ll find the dog you rescued in Level 5 will be digging. If you encourage her, you’ll get 2 Runes.
